Perchlorate is widespread in U.S. Southwest.

that disrupts thyroid function by inhibiting the uptake of iodide, is best known for its use in rocket fuel but also occurs naturally in the environment. Since the beginning of the last century, Chilean nitrate fertilizers that contained naturally produced perchlorate were applied to U.S. agricultural fields. Today, perchlorate hot spots occur, some of which seem to extend farther than what is predicted from known contamination sources. Researchers have recently turned to isotopic analysis to help pinpoint the origins of perchlorate, because manufactured and atmospherically deposited perchlorate have very different isotope signatures. Andrew Jackson of Texas Tech University and colleagues took a different tack to examine atmospherically derived perchlorate in the Southwest’s dry unsaturated or vadose zones. They collected 10–20 grams of soil to get enough perchlorate from 11 sites across seven ecosystems. Isotopic analyses would have required tons of soil. Previous research led by coauthor Michelle Walvoord of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) examined many of the same sites for

Widespread natural perchlorate in unsaturated zones of the southwest United States.
A substantial reservoir (up to 1 kg ha(-1)) of natural perchlorate is present in diverse unsaturated zones of the arid and semi-arid southwestern United States. The perchlorate co-occurs with meteoric chloride that has accumulated in these soils throughout the Holocene [0 to 10-15 ka (thousand years ago)] and possibly longer periods. Previously, natural perchlorate widely believed to be limited...
متن کاملGenetic Factors That Might Lead to Different Responses in Individuals Exposed to Perchlorate
Perchlorate has been detected in groundwater in many parts of the United States, and recent detection in vegetable and dairy food products indicates that contamination by perchlorate is more widespread than previously thought. Perchlorate is a competitive inhibitor of the sodium iodide symporter, the thyroid cell-surface protein responsible for transporting iodide from the plasma into the thyro...
متن کاملThe NAS Perchlorate Review: Questions Remain about the Perchlorate RfD
Human exposure to perchlorate is commonplace because it is a contaminant of drinking water, certain foods, and breast milk. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a perchlorate risk assessment in 2002 that yielded a reference dose (RfD) based on both the animal and human toxicology data. This assessment has been superceded by a recent National Academy of Science (NAS) review t...
متن کاملThyroid Hormones and Moderate Exposure to Perchlorate during Pregnancy in Women in Southern California
BACKGROUND Findings from national surveys suggest that everyone in the United States is exposed to perchlorate. At high doses, perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate inhibit iodide uptake into the thyroid and decrease thyroid hormone production. Small changes in thyroid hormones during pregnancy, including changes within normal reference ranges, have been linked to cognitive function declines in...

Commercial interest in perchlorates began in the late 1890s/early 1900s in Europe and the United States as a direct result of the pioneering efforts in rockets and their propulsion systems (Mendiratta et al. 1996). The production of ammonium perchlorate, the largest component of solid rocket propellants, far outpaced that of the other perchlorates listed in Table 4-1. Their commercial manufactu...
